Seamless Shift: Up-to-Date Guide to Transitioning into DevOps

How to transition to DevOps engineer career

If you are wondering how to move into DevOps, you should start with realistic expectations. There are many stages of transition in DevOps, and you may need to contend with slow progress and pitfalls along the way. Here are a few steps to a successful DevOps transition:

1. Learn the basics of DevOps

The first step to DevOps transitioning is to learn the basics of DevOps. This includes understanding the following concepts:

  • Continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD): CI/CD is a set of practices that automate software development and deployment.
  • Infrastructure as code: This is a practice of managing and provisioning infrastructure using code.
  • Containerisation: Containerisation is a practice of packaging software code and its dependencies into a single container unit.
  • Cloud computing: Cloud computing delivers services over the Internet. It encourages rapid advancement and innovation.

You can learn the basics of DevOps by reading books and articles, taking online courses, and attending workshops and conferences. There are also many DevOps communities online where you can inquire about questions you are interested in and learn from other DevOps practitioners. You can also try joining an online boot camp or completing a certification online.

2. Get hands-on experience with DevOps tools and technologies

Once you have a basic understanding of DevOps, getting hands-on experience with DevOps tools and technologies is essential. This includes tools such as Git, Jenkins, Docker, and Kubernetes. You can get hands-on experience by setting up a home lab, contributing to open-source projects, or participating in DevOps hackathons. If you already work in tech, this should be easy.

3. Build your network

Networking is an important part of any career change, especially when transitioning into DevOps. You can find some DevOps communities online and in person, where you can meet other DevOps practitioners and learn from their experiences. Attend DevOps meetups and conferences and connect with people on LinkedIn.

4. Update your resume and cover letter

Once you have the necessary skills and experience, ensure your CV is current. Highlight your DevOps skills and experience, and mention any DevOps tools and technologies you are proficient in. You may also want to create a portfolio of your DevOps work.

5. Start applying for DevOps jobs

Once your resume and cover letter are updated, it is time to start applying for DevOps jobs. There are several job boards where you can find DevOps jobs, such as Indeed, LinkedIn, and Dice. You can also search for DevOps jobs on company websites.

Here are some additional tips for transitioning into a DevOps career:

  • Be patient. It takes time to transition into a new career, especially in a field that is as rapidly growing as DevOps. Don't get discouraged if you don't land your dream job right away. Keep learning, gaining experience, and networking, and eventually, you will achieve your goals.
  • Be willing to relocate. DevOps jobs are in high demand but may not be available in all locations. If you are serious about a DevOps career, be willing to relocate to a city with more DevOps jobs available.
  • Be willing to start at the bottom. You may not be able to land your dream DevOps job right away. Be willing to start at the bottom and work your way up. As you gain experience, you can move into more senior positions.

Transitioning into a DevOps career can be challenging, but it is also very rewarding. Now that you know how to transition to DevOps engineer roles, the world is your oyster!
