Blogging is all about expertise. Whether your aim is to inform or to entertain, in order to obtain and keep readers, you have to know what you're talking about. There are millions of blogs out there. They're quick and easy, and often free, to set up, so it's no wonder that they're ten a penny. For a business blog, attracting and keeping readers is imperative; without them, you're wasting valuable resources and missing out on the publicity, brand awareness, and potential customers, that a large readership can bring. Of course, in order to gain and keep that readership, your blog has to stand out from others of its kind. People are busy and will only be willing, and able, to make time for content that is really meaningful to them.
So how can you make your blog stand out from the crowd? You can publicise it on social media. And you can add an endless number of tags to it. But while these things may get people to visit your blog once, they won't make them subscribe, comment, or retweet the link to all of their Twitter followers. They may not even come back. It's your job to make the want to - to reward them for their time and make it worth their while. It's your job to provide meaningful content, whether that's in the form of information or entertainment. Your blog content should enrich the reader’s life somehow, if only in a small way.
Want to stand out some more? Do the little things. The point of any blog, or indeed any piece of writing, is to engage with its readers. So take it one step further, by really interacting with your audience - in the comments section. For a start, activate it! Not everyone does. Respond to people's comments - share and discuss thoughts and opinions. Acknowledgement can go a long way in any relationship, not least a business/consumer one. And, not to state the obvious, be professional. Post your blog entries on time. Respond to queries at a reasonable pace. Keep a tidy site that's easy to navigate and simple to use. Make it not just tempting, but easy to come back.
